Dix Light Infantry
History
In November and December of 1861 an effort was made to organize a regiment of Light Infantry, named in horor of General John A. Dix, who was the commander of the Department of Maryland, or Middle Department, at that time.
Only five companies, all from Baltimore, were raised, for a term of enlistment for three years. In May of 1862 those five companies were consolidated into two companies and transfered to the 3rd Regiment of Infantry, Maryland Volunteers.
