Camp 2nd Maryland Regiment
I do not feel much like writing but I must to appraise you of my whereabouts.
On the 2nd of July we left Newbern North Carolina and after a delightful trip landed
here on the 9th late at night. Next day put up our tents and now I'm as comfortable
as needs be. Somehow I think the ground is softer than boards and as I have an
excellent rubber blanket I cannot take cold easily. I love soldiering better than ever before and if I could only see you and sisters and Amanda I should be perfectly contented. I think it is much warmer here than in North Carolina but after the apprenticeship I have served what can I not stand? John Engle came to camp on the 1st of July at Newbern, brought me news of you. I was very glad to see him. He stayed there for no one knew where we were going to,. I am going to write to him. I want you to write at once to me for there is no telling how short our stay may be. I expect there were letters for me in the mail we met when coming here. Give my love to all my friends Especially Hennie B. (I must write to her.) Ginnie, Mattie. Write and soon believe me.
Your affectionate son
