History
An effort was made to organize a Fourth Regiment of Infantry, Potomac Home Brigade, during the winter of 1861-62. Only three companies, A. B. & C. were raised, for a term of enlistment for three years.
Companies A. was raised in Hagerstown, Company B. Baltimore, and Company C. Frederick County.
Initially these three companies were assigned to guard duty along the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, between Harper's Ferry and Martinsburg. On August 11, 1862 they were incorporated into the ranks of the 3rd PHB. (See 3rd Maryal Infantry, Potomac Home Brigade for further information).
